Tour of a Goodyear factory

How Goodyear-Welted Shoes Are Made

Goodyear-welted shoes are not your ordinary shoes. About 180 different operations are required to make them. This factory only produces about three pairs per worker a day. Needless to say, only the most skilled craftspeople know how to make them.

The outstanding feature of Goodyear welting is the double stitching:
- First, a strip - the welt - is stitched between the upper and the insole in a single operation.
- Then the outsole is stitched to the welt.

The Goodyear "touch"

Goodyear-welted shoes offer incomparable strength and shape retention and can be resoled time and time again. All the top names in custom and popular footwear pride themselves on using this process.
